RE: I-80

IOWA CITY - State crews are preparing for an unprecedented shutdown of a nearly 30-mile stretch of Interstate 80 through Johnson and Cedar Counties due to flooding.
The closure – between milemarkers 267 and 239 -- is expected to begin Friday afternoon and would last two to three days, state transportation officials announced this morning.
Water from the Cedar River bridge is expected to overtop the roadway in both directions, said Iowa DOT spokeswoman Dena Gray-Fisher.
"This is going to be a new record," Gray-Fisher said.
Crews will work to reopen the roadway as quickly as possible, but it will depend on how quickly the water moves down stream and whether any repair will be required, Gray-Fisher said.
The planned detours:
Eastbound traffic will be routed north on Interstate 380 to Highway 30 in Cedar Rapids. Traffic will then go east to Iowa 38, and south back to Interstate 80.
Westbound Interstate 80 traffic would exit at Iowa 38 (milemarker 267), north to Highway 30 and west to U.S. 30 to Cedar Rapids and south on Interstate 380.
The Iowa DOT is continuing to monitor the highways along the detour route for any unexpected flooding problems, state officials said. In the event that it is necessary to alter the route, travelers will be informed. For the latest updates on road conditions, visit www.511ia.org or call 511 in Iowa or 800-288-1047 outside the state
Significant delays are anticipated throughout the detour route and commercial carriers are being urged to seek routes which avoid the state. Iowa residents are being told to avoid the detour routes.
All oversized loads have been suspended east of Interstate 35 from the Minnesota to Missouri border.
Additional closures in Cedar Rapids
Motorists are being urged to avoid the Cedar Rapids area and to find alternate routes.
All downtown Cedar Rapids interchanges have been closed. Additionally, the southbound Interstate 380 exit ramp at H Avenue has been closed due to flooding.
Digital message boards throughout the Cedar Rapids corridor will be displaying “Major Delays Seek Alternate Routes.”
"Major Delays Seek Alternate Routes" will be displayed on message boards on I 380 S and North boards.

RE: Things left on the highway

I recently watched a stack of 2x4x8's slide off the back of a pickup as it pulled away from a light. It was OK 'cause the trooper behind them at the light stopped them with his radiator as they were sliding out!

Chicago area route advice needed

We leave MI for Yellowstone on Saturday and ask advice on the best route around Chicago area to hook up to I-90 after the toll roads. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

RE: Electric Tongue Jack and Tailgate

I had the same issue with mine & only had to slightly elongate one hole in the ultra fab bracket to get it to line up with the bolt holes on the trailer. The tailgate just clears the jack and little accessory light.

RE: RV Fire Downtown Toronto

A propane bottle will not explode in a fire; the pop-off valve will open and dump the fuel out in turn adding fuel to the fire but no explosion. We routinely lit a 500# propane tank when I was on the fire department for fire drills and never once did it blow up.
Don
True, lighting the vapor or liquid at the valve will not cause the tank to blow as long as internal pressure is there but if the tank is weakened by direct flame impingement long enough to fatigue the metal before all the liquid is spent at the valve it will BLEVE.

RE: WHY WOULD YOU BUY ONLINE OUT Of STATE

what about when you need service? or some of the little fit and finish issues that most new rv's need. Its been my experiance that the local dealers are not too receptive to doing the work.
Not always true. I bought from Terrytown but they dropped the ball on service. General RV sells the same brand and was very interested in helping me. American RV did the Dometic recall service on the fridge without question. We live in a great area for options (Grand Rapids MI)with fierce competition between dealers within a short distance of each other. They know it and will service a unit sold at the competition to get the next sale.

RE: Tow Haul Usage?

In my F250, I "set it and forget it". I always run in "Tow Haul" any time when towing. I let the truck's computer figure out what it wants to do with the engine and transmission.
Ditto.

RE: Speed Limit on Ultra-Lite Trailers?

Tire ratings and max suggested speeds aside, I'm going on season 5 with the Grand Surveyor and tow between 65-70 with no adverse effect on the trailer or it's components. I have hit short bursts of speed to 85 and the trailer did not disintegrate. Obviously, on a rough bumpy road speed is adjusted accordingly.

RE: CAMPER'S COMPLAINTS

Unfortunately, some of those Biscuit Heads can be extremely annoying. Last year we had the displeasure of having 2 families of them camp next to us at Taquamana Falls (I know I spelled that wrong) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They let the kids have slingshots. And let them chase chipmunks with them. Well. They eventually caught one. The smaller children were traumatized by the dying lil critter. Really upset us. Fortunately the left the next morning.
They sound like the same ones who complained that Lake Superior was too cold and insisted someone should do something about that.

RE: please help me with a towing question

Check the limits of your TV and if it is within GCVWR see if the seller will let you hook to it for a test-tow. If it works well, make the buy.

RE: What movies are on your "must have" for camping?

We take a few kid movies for the rainy days and various TV series like Bones, X-Files, Star Trek Voyager & others. It's nice to have a short 40-minute watch before lights out and not be committed to a full lenght movie. We'll throw in a few action & comedy movies for good measure. Might not get them off the shelf all summer if the weather is cooperating.

RE: Which do you Fear more

Being abducted by aliens...again:E What? You, too??!!
My apologies - my assistant mixed up the abduction list and it appears that some of you got picked up more than once. For those of you who are still our "guest", our firm has since contracted with a quality control consultant who is working hard on a fail-safe solution for implementation tomorrow. In the mean time sit back and enjoy the music.

RE: Prodigy Brake Controller

The dealer installed the Prodigy on my TV as part of the deal. Having had a cheap controller on the prior TV I was eager to see how the Prodigy would compare. Short story long - the Prodigy kicked the cheap controller's butt! Better yet - the dealer paid for and installed it as part of the sale! I highly recommend the Prodigy or any similar device.

RE: Old Routes with travel history

I would like to run Route 2 from Maine to Glacier. Covers the northern border states.
I think, not entirely sure, that US 2 disappears at Rouses Point, New York until one arrives at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, where it starts again.
I have had same idea, of following US 2 all the way across country. But searching Rand McNally and other map sources, appears US 2 is replaced by interstates and other roads until location I mentioned above.
There are two sections - East from Maine to New York State, and West from Michigan (at the Bridge) to Oregon. I'm interested in running that one myself.

RE: ARE POSTERS HERE IN DENIAL??

We decided we weren't going to Disney (had no plans to go anyway). The money we saved by not going where we had no plans to go anyway will go to our Yellowstone trip in June and the leftover will fund the rest of our camping fuel for the season. Could be denial but it works for me.

RE: Listen to my DIESEL engine !!

Why is it that some think that the sound of their diesel is so cool, that they pull into a CG way after dark and then let it run for close to 45 minutes, while they set up their site, then get up just after dawn and crank it back up and let it run for 30 minutes while the pick up and get ready to move on. None of them can say it was to cool it down, as they just drove 8 miles through town at 25 MPH, so it wasn't even close to needing a cool down. Spent all winter here and this happens about once a week, mainly during late evening, but last night at 9pm was the worst. Those that think others like to know you have a diesel, wake up, it is hurting your engine to idle like that and it is annoying to your fellow campers.
Besides beating this dead horse again Did you ask the offender why? Was it actually 45 minutes? Did you offer to help? Are you a certified diesel mechanic? Did you take a poll of all the other campers to verify they were annoyed?
Just curious.
